I've gotten one or two emails of concern and confusion due to the spelling of Cant as Kant.
The main reason for this:
Due to the earlier practical application of writing and the mass illiteracy of the earlier Pavee culture, which was much in line with most early Irish as a whole, the language is a primarily verbal one with little to no secondary support. Due to this circumstance the written words are based on a phonetical understanding of those that use it, in this case it also includes the name of the language itself.
Although the use of spelling 'cant' it is spelt 'kant' with a 'k' instead of a 'c' is a break from the greater popularity of use, it is more in keeping with the phonetic heritage of the word as a primary word of mouth language, with little secondary support, rather then its more recent assimilation into an Anglicised form.
Of course feel free to use the traditional “Cant” if it better suits your interest, as ultimitly the practice is far more important then that it may or may not be called.
