How does this make you feel?
I think this carry on iust needed any more. Have we not moved beyond it or does beatin the shite out of someone prove a possible wrong point right?
(In general as i no idea whats this is about)
I understand self defence an that is important and useful often necessary but this is both organised and bloody...
I know its a part of our culture but do we still need it? Are there other ways? Why aren't we using them more? Or is it just some of our more unfortunate and uneducated members that still cling to the primal understanding and raw aggression of the fist.
Not to offend anyone but I think things like this do major damage to traveller rights. If you look there's even children there...

i dont see a problem with it meself. travellers have there own ways of sorting things. If someone leaves the travellin life and intergrat with the settled, then they will have to accept the laws of the settled.
To sort things woith a fite keeps a tradition of traveller ways. To stop that, is astep to us losing even more identity.
I am a bare knuckle fiter m,eself and i have had 5 fights but im also trained MMA fiter, so im mopre pro fiter than most maybe, but ill be interested in other views on this
nice interestin post n subject

not sure how filming it cheapens it, just brings it to a wider audience i reckon
i wud never suggest a fite is better than talking thru and hopefully agreeing a point in a non fiting way. If all else fails, then fite

yeh, not sure about the children being there...
i do think its better safety wise to have a group there, much better than just 2 geezers fitin with no one watchin or to help any injured.
Most of these fights r refereed big time. This usually stops any serious damage.

This does not represent me nor my family and I in no way appreciate or support such primal and illegal acts of aggression and ego centric displays of violence.
Not in my name.

Yes its part of Traveller culture, but I think we need to form more organised ways to discuss things properly before resorting to fights. Have you heard of the Kris? Its a European Romani Gypsy people's court. They take a panel of respected elders (who in my opinion should be trained in conflict resolution) and they present their grievance to the court in front of the accused. If the accused is found guilty he will be declared unclean for a set period and given appropriate punishment (which should not include violence). The punishment could be that nobody will work with him or buy from him for the set period, nobody will also accept food or drink from him for that period either, the length of uncleanliness varies according to the "crime" as does the severity of the shunning. Of course it would need to be set as to which crimes deserve which punishments and the panels cannot go around distributing punishments without proper adherence to set rules of trial etc. I think if the Traveller community could come up with this system it would make us look so much better, we cant complain about discrimination and stereotypes if we continue such practices as bare knuckle fighting as conflict resolutions.

I love this idea! But I'm not sure if the Irish travelling community would work in the same way. Our sociopolitical structure and alliances are very different with partition a low probability and personal alliances meaning far more then a ruling. Does anyone know if there is a traditional structure like this used by the earlier Travellers?
Promises and deals were made by families themselves. Even if it was just one person involved in a situation... sure were not ones for letting family stand alone and thankfully violence isn't the only way we used to or can now deal with things.
How does the Kris system work out these days? With a lot of the traditional values being overwhelmed by the bigger community and all of that.
