Blessing the fire Empty
PostSubject: Blessing the fire   Blessing the fire EmptyWed Sep 23, 2009 2:57 pm

Copied from a book I have – if anyone wants a loan of it just let me know!!!

Blessing the fire

Fire, the cardinal element of transmutation, change and light, is also the vessel of the main form of cooking food, heating bodies and grants light to the darkness. It also protects during the night from wild animals and was often the focal point at any site, to cook at, to gather around in communion with one another and to talk, share and grow as a people.

The lighting, keeping and stirring of a fire was due to its practical and essential nature, of high importance and focus in establishing any site of temporary or prolonged stay, and although in the later part of the last century with growing technological advances this was not so much of a task before such things it was of severe and perhaps life threatening importance.

The below prayer is not only for the blessing of a fire, but for the dedication of its flame. The ancestors knew that the element had no earthly master and would turn from friend to foe as easily as the wind turns in direction, so in the dedication of the flame a greater sense of protection and security was sought, and with the passing knowledge of many lives lost at a camp fire, it is clear that it was not always found.

English
I will kindle my fire this morning
In the presence of the holy angels of heaven
In the presence of Mary of the loveliest form
In the presence of Christ of the myriad charms
Without malice without jealousy without envy
Without fear without terror of anyone under the sun
But the Holy Son of God to shield me
Without malice without jealousy without envy
Without fear, without terror of anyone under the sun
But the Holy Son of God to shield me
God kindle Thou in my heart within
A flame of love to my neighbour
To my foe to my friend to my kindred all
To the brave to the knave to the thrall
O Son of the loveliest Mary
From the lowliest thing that liveth
To the Name that is highest of all.
Amen
