Hi all!

My name is Dave, I'm a gay photographer, I was wondering if some of the members here would be open to working on a photo essay with me?
Basically a lot of my work is focused on giving visual representation to members of the LGBT community who are not catered for in mainstream gay publications. In the past I have worked with rural gay people, and disabled lgbt members.
I would like to meet with some lgbt travellers, have a chat about your experiences within the gay and the traveller community and see about coming up with a photographic way of representing it.
The initial project is for college but could be published at a later date.
If you think you would be interested in this please give me a shout on here and we can arrange from there.

Looking forward to meeting some of you!

Dave

Moderators PaveePrince and Wandering Minsterel caught up with Powerdervein after the LGBT Diversity Seminar in Athlone, thursday September 30th. He brought us through the process of his Project and assured us that members that would like to be involved in it could remain totally anonymous and face shots were not crucial.

Dave explained that in past photo shoots that he had done with transgendered people he had photographed the possessions of some people who did not want their faces used. following a photoshoot participants are invited to choose which photo's will be allowed onto his photo essay and a contract will be drawn up to ensure the same. With this information we'd be delighted to back Dave's project and have agreed to be photographed on the day.

We have invited Dave to the next LBGT Pavee gathering which will be held in Galway on 16th October

Looking forward to meeting some of you in Galway - I've booked in for the night, might as well make the most of it!
If anyone would like further info on the photo essay give me a bell on here and I'll try answer any questions.

Hi, thanks for getting in touch.
Yes, i have examples of other work, as some of it is private I can only send by mail as it is not up on flickr etc.
Previously when I did work with a female to male transexual we decided not to use any images of him. I wanted to avoid the whole 'this is what a trans looks like' so I shot possessions that he used to achieve the apperance he wanted - I shot them like like advertised goods, the aim was to place a percieved value on these often normal or mundane objects to get the viewer to think about the importance the play in the life of a F to M trans.
Other work was more straight forward images, exploring the lives of lesbians living in Rural Ireland, and a personal project with a disabled gay man. Usually I work with a mix of portrait, object, and place to achieve a sense of a persons experiances and views.

For this project I really want to give visual repersentation to a group who are almost invisible in society. LGBT travellers, as you all know, are at greater risk of depression and isolation - by presenting these images I would like to let others in a similar situation see that they are not alone - also I would hope that fore the people taking part it would help improve their self image and identity.
By working one on one with people I want to come up with ways of repersenting them - this does not have to be a face pic, it can be a possession, a gesture, where they live etc.
The deadline for the project is 18th of December so i have a fair amount of time left if anyone else would like to be part of this then feel free to contact me waith any question etc.

Hope that answered some of your questions and wasn't oo long winded!!

Dave

Hi All

I had a tutorial with my lecturer who is over seeing projects this year.
While I still have some time to finish it he is anxious that I have no images yet and is considering asking for a proposal for another photo essay.
I would really like to go ahead with this project as I feel it is important to start creating more awareness and give visual representation to LGBT travellers. If anyone would like to take part please contact me ASAP – especially if anyone in free this weekend to start taking some images.

Cheers

Dave
